All foreign nurses must have a three-year degree or diploma from a Nursing School/College and a Registered Nurse licence in India. About three to four years of training experience is preferred. Nurses educated in India have to obtain the CGFNS Certificate before applying to any state licence in the USA.

The CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) Certificate includes:
Credentials Review
Qualifying Exam of nursing knowledge
English language proficiency examination (TOEFL)

Registered Nurses practicing in the USA have to be licenced in the state in which they are employed. Every state in the USA issues its own Nursing Licences. The licences are issued after completion of the State Licence Examination NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-LPN. All state regulations are different and states issue a variety of nursing licences in various nursing specialties.
The NCLEX one-day exam is given only in the USA and its territories six times a week every month. For information on regulations and application information please refer to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc.
